“MATTEMATIC.” CLASSIC LOOKS WITH A CONFIDENT EDGE.

American Crew doesn’t just define the trends, they define the techniques that create them. As a stylist, each year I look forward to seeing the new American Crew Collection, a guide of how to recreate the hottest looks from the runway and bring them to my clients in the salon.

This year’s collection “Mattematic” doesn’t disappoint. It contains three different classic looks that have a confident edge. Where standard tapers come with unexpected interior intrigue. And where the spirit of the ’80s goes undercover in 21st century camouflage.

One of my favorite looks from the Collection is “Rick.” Energized by a strict adherence to the head shape that builds to a dramatic swerve front and center, this style exudes rebellious confidence. It’s classic in its foundation, giving a subtle nod to the ’80s Pompadour. This look is perfect for men who want to make a bold statement, but also appreciate attention to detail and still want a refined style. The shape is versatile and can be styled with a polish or matte finish.

I used American Crew’s new styling product Ultramatte to create the look. Ultramatte is a liquid that can be applied to wet hair (ultra guy friendly). When formed with heat or when air dried it creates a matte finish. The feeling on the hair is dry and weightless when brushed out with heat, or gelled and matte when left untouched. I LOVE IT!

To achieve “Rick’s” style follow the directions below. It’s an easy look that can be created in just minutes.

1. Apply American Crew Ultramatte to slightly damp hair.
2. Work the product from scalp to ends to assist the style’s volume and wave.
3. Use the Mason Pearson brush and a blow dryer to style the final shape, giving a nod to the Pompadour.

For the step-by-step technical instructions on the cut, ask your sales representative on how you can get your hands on the “Mattematic” Collection.

Whether you want to stay true to classic looks or are always pushing the boundaries, the Mattematic Collection will provide you with the tools and inspiration to bring a whole new perspective to men’s style.

“RICK’S” LOOK WORKS BEST ON:
• Medium to thick hair
• Hair with a little bit of wave
• Men who want to make a bold statement while maintaining a refined style

SOMETIMES THE BEST WAY TO SHINE IS NOT TO

The “matte” finish is taking the world by storm. Luxury cars like the Rolls Royce Phantom. High-End Electronics. Catwalk Fashion. And American Crew is about to bring this trend to men’s hair.

This year’s coveted looks from the runway will be strong, structured and defined with no shine. They will be a unique blend of the styling architecture of the 1980s with an unruffled attitude that’s uniquely 21st century. As the leader in men’s grooming, American Crew is here to transition the height of fashion to the world of real, authentic men.

So how do you steal this style and make it your own? American Crew has raised the bar in men’s grooming to create a new matte finishing product, Ultramatte. Stylists who want to break the mold and men who want the latest trends should be plotting ways to get their hands on this revolutionary new product. This fast drying fixative provides medium hold and a matte finish. Use Ultramatte to create long-lasting styles that prove that dull is anything but.

ULTRAMATTE – GET THE CONTROL WITHOUT THE SHINE

*Look for more information on Ultramatte and the 2012 American Crew Collection “Mattematic” Coming Soon. Ultramatte will be available in salons March 2012.

Gould’s Salon & Spa Supports Our Troops.

Melissa Williams Shares Her Salon’s Fund-raising Story

Gould’s Day Spa & Salon is a family owned and operated chain of Salons and Spas and one Cosmetology School, a total of 14 locations in the Memphis, Tennessee Area. I have been working with Gould’s 17 years. I learned about the American Crew Military Edition Program thru a close friend of mine. The Program encouraged American Crew’s salon community to hold fund-raising events for the USO and provided us all of the materials we would need to hold the event. I encouraged my salon to participate in the program, as I personally have known soldiers who have fought for our country and have been grateful for the programs the USO provides them.

Three years ago on October 13th my close friend’s son, who was stationed in Afghanistan, was injured in a roadside bomb and then was transferred to Walter Reed. I visited my friend and her son while he was healing, and it was there that I really started to understand why it was important to “support our troops” as well as all the good that the USO does to give back. After leaving Walter Reed I wanted to know how in my life I can continue to give back. As my friend always says about the time her son spent at Walter Reed and meeting all the other soldiers – “you just don’t know” until you really start to meet and talk with the other soldiers and their family. Then you really understand the sacrifice they all make.

After my experience at Walter Reid, I always thank a soldier if I see them in an airport or just out and about! Gould’s wanted to give back and decided to participate in the program by holding our own USO fundraising event on October 3rd, 2011 in our School, Gould’s Academy. We sold USO t-shirts, provided complimentary haircuts for all of those with a Military ID and $10.00 haircuts without a Military ID. We also sold the American Crew Military Edition Product Line in our salons so all of our customers could show their support for our troops! We continued to raise money until the end of November and have raised $2229.43 as of today.

Gould’s loves our Troops and we hope that together with American Crew and the salon community we have shown our support!

Mission: Ready to Wear

The military look is back in a big way this winter, as designers accent the masculine with fitted trousers and broad-shouldered shirts and jackets. The look is well put together, as are the men who wear it best.

It’s no secret that women love a man in uniform. But you don’t need to enlist to benefit from this insight. However, you do need to know what to look for in military gear.

When you’re looking to convey vintage style, head out to you local Army & Navy Surplus store. Many high quality pea coats have been sourced this way. In fact, your dad probably found his in a surplus store.

While you’re at the Army & Navy store, scour the racks for rugged shear-lings and leather bomber jackets too. You’re also in the perfect spot for combat boots, wool caps and goods like a rucksack or multi-tool. If it’s your lucky day you may spot a Military Chrono watch and be able to pick it up for a fraction of its real value.

When you’re pulling together a look for a night on the town, consider a double-breasted suit inspired by Naval officers’ uniforms (and a shoe shine).

Craig Hanson, our Creative Director, and a fan of military-inspired style says, “It’s great to see menswear move from ultra-casual to a more buttoned-up traditional look, and the military aesthetic is helping to fuel this orderly yet rugged trend.”

Don’t Wait To Be Great

I believe that the hard work and perseverance I put in, from day one of Cosmetology school, led me to the place I am today. I believe that education is the way to success. I believe that American Crew is the leader in men’s grooming. Here’s my story of how American Crew has shaped my career.

I always knew I wanted more out of my career than behind-the-chair work. I became very interested in American Crew during my cosmetology training. I would follow the growth of Crew in the industry trade magazines the school carried and the positive impact they were having on hair stylists and consumers. They were an exciting company to track. A fellow student and I made great travel buddies, setting our sights on attending one hair show a year. This is where the love affair with Crew really took off. To see them on stage, listen to the their verbiage and watch them cut and create these amazing looks for men was captivating. I needed to be a part of the culture.

The year I received my cosmetology license, I re-enrolled in school for my educator’s license. The year after that, I attended the American Crew Method 01 course at the Menswork Academy. I remember the very first time I stepped foot into the Menswork Academy. There was all this imagery on exposed brick walls showcasing visuals I had seen in Crew style selectors. There were also blown up head sheets diagramming haircuts. Walking across the concrete floor, I took my seat in the front and readied my notepad. The instructors were so patient and professional, as we jumped immediately into loads of information on: masculine versus feminine silhouettes, cutting from the interior to exterior, the important placement of horseshoe-shaped partings, body positioning, hand position, proper usage of tools, proper product usage and how to retail, effective consultations and how to build your men’s business.

Shortly after that experience, I went back to attend the Menswork Method 02 course. This course strengthened me as a stylist further, even influencing my women’s haircutting. Instead of depending on the work of a texturizing tool, it instilled in me the knowledge to make decisions, using the shear or razor, to control the haircut with guided force.

Setting my sights on a regional education role with the company, I applied to American Crew for a position and was hired as a TeamCrew educator. Refining my skills as an artist and as an educator, I was promoted to an International All-Star educator. Last year, I received the All-Star of the Year award. Most recently I was offered a position as a Menswork Academy instructor.

You could ask anyone on the American Crew education team about their journey to a cultivated spot on TeamCrew or International All-Star. Their stories would all be different. The common theme would be hard work and perseverance. To find out more information on American Crew’s education classes and for a full list of Menswork Academy course dates in 2012 go to www.americancrew.com or login to our stylist site and search under the education tab. Nurture your career and your success with education.

FACE OFF 2011

Back in 2003, American Crew Australia held the first FACE OFF competition in Melbourne. Leap forward to 2011, FACE OFF has gained wide reaching attention, and has discovered the salons and stylists in Australia and the UK that are producing the most original and creative hairstyles for men. Dean Smith of Zoology, London encourages every stylist to enter, “…you’d be mad not to!  You’ll have the time of your life and an experience you’ll never forget.  It’s opened so many new doors for me, created some amazing opportunities and taught me a lot about myself.”

Along with the recognition a stylist receives from winning FACE OFF, this program features the winning styles in a photo shoot with American Crew founder David Raccuglia, and a lavish trip to Los Angeles. The styles, photographed in stunning black and white, capture the iconic style and imagery that American Crew is known for across the globe.  Parisa Sassani of Wacky Barber in London said, “I would recommend all stylists who are passionate about the craft to enter FACE OFF.  Not just because it’s a luxurious trip but because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show off your skills in a great studio, working with some of the most talented people in this industry!”

While in LA, this year’s FACE OFF winners stayed at the legendary Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood.  The Chateau, known as a local haunt for celebrities, sharing the garden for breakfast with the likes of Bono and Marilyn Manson at the Chateau became a daily event for the stylists. The winners from Australia and the UK were treated to sightseeing along the Venice Beach boardwalk, and dining at world renowned Cecconi’s…but nothing can beat sitting in a booth next to Christina Aguilera at the hottest club in town, The Beverly.

LA was fun, but everyone was excited for the photo shoot. Amber De Kruiff an Australian winner, said, “The day of the shoot was awesome. CREW really outdid themselves having us shoot at Milk Studios. Not only was the studio high tech, but the team they provided us with from wardrobe stylists and makeup to some of the best male models in the business, was like nothing I have been a part of before, a professional and slick production. David was fantastic to work with! He was really supportive and encouraging in a way that just brings out the best in everyone! He has such an eye for what to shoot-he is the master of men’s photography. To work with the originator of CREW is something I felt privileged to be a part of.” Check out all the behind the scenes photos from the photo shoot at www.facebook.com/americancrew

At American Crew we look forward to seeing the talent 2012 brings in Australia and the UK. Congrats again to the 2011 winners and let’s get ready for a great FACE OFF 2012.
